Book a repair visit

Which machine, and what is it doing? The shop calls you back with a two-hour window. The trip out and the diagnosis run $99; if you then okay the repair, that $99 vanishes into the single total on the sheet. Book the visit for tomorrow or the day after and the repair comes down by up to $15 (same-day visits don’t qualify); a second machine looked at on the same trip takes $10 off its own diagnosis.

Why we begin in the cabinet next to the dishwasher

Dishwasher repair — Hawks Prairie Appliance Pro
Dishwasher not draining

A dishwasher's drain hose leaves the machine, climbs to a high loop under the counter or to an air gap on the sink deck, and empties into the garbage disposal or a tailpiece on the sink drain. Anything that blocks that route, a knockout plug still sealing a fresh disposal, a gummed-up air gap, a hose that sags into a trap of its own, will leave water in the tub exactly as a dead pump would, and the dishwasher's own display will report a drain fault it did not cause. Checking the cabinet takes minutes and needs no parts, so it comes before any panel is removed from the machine.

Local water and local moving habits both feed this call. Lacey and DuPont city water is moderately hard groundwater with manganese in some pressure zones, and prairie wells around Nisqually, Yelm and the east shore of Long Lake add iron; either leaves a crust in the sump, the check valve and the pump that narrows the passage a little each year. Meanwhile, in a corridor where families move every few years, disposals get replaced by handy new owners in Hoffman Hill and Meridian Campus and the dishwasher hose reconnected without knocking out the plug, so the first cycle after move-in ends in a full tub. Both are quick to spot once you know to look.

From the sink back to the pump

Checkpoint, sink side to machine sideWhat blocks or fails hereHow the technician handles it
Garbage disposal inletKnockout plug never removed from a new disposal, or the disposal itself packed with food so the dishwasher line has nowhere to goPlug punched out and retrieved, disposal run clear, hose refitted with a fresh clamp; a common find in houses that changed hands during PCS season
Air gap on the counter, where one is fittedCap chamber clogged with food paste so water spits onto the counter or backs into the tub; older Lacey central and Tanglewilde kitchens have themAir gap opened and cleaned, both hoses checked for splits, and the routing corrected so the gap actually performs its job
Drain hose routing under the sinkHose without a high loop sags into a low bend that holds water and debris, or it is kinked where a new cabinet organizer was installedHose lifted and secured high under the counter, kinks removed, and the hose replaced if it has gone brittle or narrowed with scale
Check valve where the hose meets the machineSmall rubber flap stuck open so sink water drifts back into the tub, or stuck shut so the pump labors and quits; mineral crust is the usual culprit on well waterValve removed, cleaned or replaced, sump flushed of the grit that stuck it, and a full drain observed with the kick plate off
Sump filter and chopper inside the tubCylindrical filter caked with grease and glass shards, or a fragment jamming the chopper blade so the pump cannot spin; scale from hard water glues it all togetherFilter assembly removed and cleaned, chopper area cleared, and you are shown how to pull the filter monthly so this stop stays clear
Drain pump, and finally the controlPump impeller jammed or motor windings open, or a board relay or float switch that never commands the pump at allPump removed from underneath, impeller freed or the pump replaced from van stock, float and relay tested; the board is quoted only when everything upstream has been proven good

Safe checks you can make yourself

  • Run the garbage disposal for half a minute with cold water before starting the dishwasher; a full disposal blocks the drain line.
  • Look under the sink for the dishwasher hose: it should rise to a loop near the counter before dropping to the disposal or drain, not lie in a slump on the cabinet floor.
  • If there is a chrome cap on the sink deck, twist it off and clear any debris from the air gap beneath it.
  • Pull the lower rack, twist out the cylindrical filter set into the tub floor, rinse it and fish anything out of the sump beneath, watching for glass.
  • Press and hold Start or Cancel until the machine begins a drain-only cycle, then listen for the pump: humming without water moving means a jam, silence means power or control.
  • If the house was recently bought or the disposal recently changed, look for the dishwasher plug in the disposal inlet before anything else.

When to hand it to us

Once the disposal, air gap, hose loop and filter are clear and the tub still refuses to empty, the problem is in the check valve, the pump or the control, and each of those wants a meter and, often, a part from the van. Standing water also risks a leak into the cabinet floor, and swollen particleboard under a dishwasher costs more than the pump. We reach Lacey, DuPont, Jubilee and Long Lake within the week. Our $99 diagnostic buys the cabinet-to-pump inspection and a firm quote in writing; if you accept it, the $99 is already counted toward that quote, and if you do not, $99 settles the visit.

Questions

We moved into a DuPont house last month and the dishwasher has never drained. What is likely?

Nine times out of ten in that story the previous owner or a mover fitted a new garbage disposal and left the knockout plug in the dishwasher inlet, or the hose was reconnected without its high loop. Both are found within minutes of opening the sink cabinet and neither needs a part from the dishwasher, so the visit is short and the quote is small.

Does hard water really stop a dishwasher draining?

Slowly, yes. Lacey and DuPont city water and the prairie wells around Yelm and Nisqually leave scale in the sump, on the check valve and around the pump impeller, and the passages narrow until food debris that once passed now sticks. We clean the scale during the repair and can suggest a rinse-aid and filter routine that keeps the drain path open longer.

My Bosch dishwasher shows E24. Is that the pump?

E24 is Bosch's drain fault, and it is triggered by anything on the drain route, not just the pump. We see it from clogged filters, from a seized check valve, from a hose pinched behind the cabinet and, less often, from a failed pump. The diagnostic works through those in order so you do not buy a pump to fix a hose.

The dishwasher in our Jubilee kitchen is quiet and we cannot hear whether the pump runs. How do you tell?

We start a drain cycle with the kick plate removed and read the voltage arriving at the pump while listening through the panel. Power arriving with no movement means the pump is jammed or its windings are open; no power means the control or float switch. It takes a few minutes and settles the question without guessing.

If mine is beyond repair, do you install the replacement?

We repair rather than sell, so if the pump, sump and control on an old machine have all reached the end together we say so during the $99 visit and you decide what to buy. Once the new machine is in place we are glad to be called back to check the hose loop and disposal connection so the first cycle drains cleanly.

The visit

From your call to the test cycle

  1. STEP 01

    Reach the shop

Say which machine and what it is doing. You get a two-hour window that works around school runs and shifts, and a call when the van leaves the previous stop.

  2. STEP 02

    Instruments first

Clamp meter on the compressor lead, probe thermometer in the cabinet, manometer on the gas manifold. Once the failed part has a name the whole job goes onto one sheet: a single total with the $99 already sitting inside it.

  3. STEP 03

    Your call

Yes, and the part is usually on a van shelf and fitted that afternoon. No, and your only cost is the $99, plus knowing what broke.

  4. STEP 04

    Proof it works

A complete cycle runs while you watch, the kick panel goes back on straight, and the invoice lists the warranty term in print.

Dishwasher not draining? Tell us, we bring the parts.

Call or send the form; you hear back with a window before the shop closes, the van arrives carrying the usual parts for your make, and the $99 for the diagnosis rolls into the repair total if you go ahead.
