Freezer frost buildup in Lacey: where the ice sits names the fault
Frost is not one problem but five, and the place it collects inside the freezer separates them.

Why Lacey freezers frost over, and why the location matters
A modern self-defrosting freezer melts its own evaporator several times a day with a heater, a defrost thermostat and a timer or board that decides when. When any link in that chain fails, frost that should have drained away stays put and grows. But frost also arrives from outside the machine, past a gasket that has stopped sealing, around a door propped open a crack by a bag of peas, or up a drain tube that froze and backed up. Because each source deposits ice in a particular spot, we ask you to describe the frost before we book, and knowing where it sits often tells us which parts to bring.
Our corner of Thurston County makes frost more likely than the manuals assume. Air between October and May is saturated, and a chest freezer in a Long Lake cabin garage or a second upright in a Jubilee laundry room pulls moist air in every time the lid lifts. The single-level homes off Willamette Drive belong to owners who travel for weeks at a stretch, and a door pushed almost closed before a trip returns them to a solid block. In Hawks Prairie subdivisions built between 2005 and 2015 the builder-grade refrigerators are reaching the age where defrost heaters open up, and the neighbors tend to hit it within months of one another.
Five places frost collects, plus the one that is not frost
| Where the ice has settled | The likely reason | What the technician does about it |
|---|---|---|
| A thick sheet across the whole back wall of the freezer, food frosty, cooling weak | The defrost heater has gone open or the defrost thermostat no longer closes, so the evaporator behind that wall never melts | Panel comes off, heater and thermostat are read for continuity, the failed one is changed and the timer or board is checked for the fault that let it happen |
| Frost only along the top and hinge side of the door opening | Door gasket has hardened, torn or pulled out of its channel; on French-door models the flipper mullion may not be folding home | Gasket is traced with a light and a bill, then replaced and seated with heat so it lies flat; mullion hinge and heater checked on French doors |
| A ridge of ice in the bottom of the freezer, sometimes leaking onto the floor when it thaws | Defrost drain tube froze because its little heater or drip pan clip failed, so meltwater refreezes on the floor instead of leaving | Drain is cleared with warm water and a flexible tool, the drain heater or clip is replaced, and the pan under the cabinet is checked for standing water |
| Fine snow on every package and inside the bags, the freezer itself fairly clean | Room air is getting in with each opening or through a slow leak, and the moisture freezes on the coldest surfaces, the food itself | We check door alignment, hinge cams, gasket and cabinet level, then look for a stuck-open damper pushing extra air if the frost persists |
| Ice caked inside the ice room of a French-door refrigerator, ice maker stalled | Warm air seeping into the ice compartment past a duct door or a cracked ice-room seal, common on French doors with the ice maker in the door | Ice room is thawed, seals and duct door checked, fill tube inspected for the drip that becomes a stalagmite, and the maker replaced only if the module itself has failed |
| Light frost everywhere and the compressor never rests, freezer warmer than it should be | Not really a frost fault: a low refrigerant charge or a dirty condenser makes the evaporator frost unevenly and run without cycling | Condenser cleaned first; if the frost pattern on the coil still looks lopsided we discuss a sealed-system diagnosis and whether the maker's coverage applies |
Six things you can safely check yourself
- Note where the frost sits with the door open and tell us when you book; the pattern shortens the visit.
- Slide a sheet of paper into the closed door at several points around the gasket and feel for spots where it pulls out with no drag.
- Look for a bag or box that is stopping the door from closing fully, especially in a chest freezer where a lid can sit a finger's width open for weeks.
- Check that the freezer sits level or tilts very slightly back so the doors swing shut on their own rather than drifting open.
- Empty a small heavily frosted freezer, unplug it and let it thaw with the door open and towels on the floor; if the frost returns within a fortnight the defrost circuit is the culprit.
- Feel the back wall of the freezer through the frost: a wall that is warm in one patch and iced everywhere else usually means the heater is fine but the drain has blocked.
When frost stops being a chore and becomes a repair
Scraping a freezer once a year is maintenance; scraping it monthly is a symptom. Book a visit when a full manual defrost buys you less than a few weeks, when meltwater appears on the kitchen floor, when the freezer temperature climbs above zero, or when a French-door ice compartment freezes into a block for the second time. We reach Lacey, Jubilee and DuPont inside the week and respect quiet hours and HOA van rules. The visit starts at $99 for the diagnosis and one firm figure for the fix; say yes and that $99 sits within the repair cost, say no and it is your only cost.
Questions
We are leaving Jubilee for six weeks. How do we stop the freezer frosting while we are gone?
Leave it three-quarters full, since a full freezer holds temperature and admits less air. Run the paper test around the gasket before you go, tape a note to the door so nobody opens it, and ask a neighbor to glance at the temperature display once a week. If it frosts anyway while nobody has opened it, the defrost circuit needs metering, not the door.
Is frost in the ice room of my LG French-door the same problem as frost in the freezer?
No. The ice room is a small separate box fed by a duct from the freezer, and it frosts when warm refrigerator air leaks past its seal or duct door. The main freezer's defrost heater is usually fine. We thaw the compartment, correct the seal or duct, and replace the ice maker only if the module has actually failed.
My chest freezer in the garage at Long Lake frosts every winter. Is that normal?
A manual-defrost chest freezer frosts by design and needs emptying and thawing about once a year; damp lakeside garage air speeds that up. Frost that goes from a dusting to an inch in a month points at a lid gasket that has hardened, which we replace, or a lid that is not sitting square on the cabinet.
Can a defrost heater be replaced on a fifteen-year-old Whirlpool side-by-side?
Usually, yes. Defrost heaters, thermostats and adaptive defrost boards for Whirlpool, Kenmore, Maytag and Amana side-by-sides remain available and are reasonable repairs on a cabinet whose compressor is still healthy. During the $99 diagnostic we confirm the compressor and condenser are sound before suggesting you spend on the defrost parts.
Do you replace door gaskets on refrigerators in DuPont townhomes?
Yes. Gaskets for LG, GE, Whirlpool and Frigidaire refrigerators are ordered by model and serial, usually arrive within days, and are fitted and heat-seated so they lie flat. Hoffman Hill and Palisade Park kitchens tend to share the same handful of models, so we often carry the common ones in the van.

From your call to the test cycle
- STEP 01
Reach the shop
Say which machine and what it is doing. You get a two-hour window that works around school runs and shifts, and a call when the van leaves the previous stop.
- STEP 02
Instruments first
Clamp meter on the compressor lead, probe thermometer in the cabinet, manometer on the gas manifold. Once the failed part has a name the whole job goes onto one sheet: a single total with the $99 already sitting inside it.
- STEP 03
Your call
Yes, and the part is usually on a van shelf and fitted that afternoon. No, and your only cost is the $99, plus knowing what broke.
- STEP 04
Proof it works
A complete cycle runs while you watch, the kick panel goes back on straight, and the invoice lists the warranty term in print.
Freezer frost buildup? Tell us, we bring the parts.
Call or send the form; you hear back with a window before the shop closes, the van arrives carrying the usual parts for your make, and the $99 for the diagnosis rolls into the repair total if you go ahead.
