Ranges and ovens in Lacey kitchens
Lacey cooks on three fuels. The 1970s–90s houses along Ruddell Road and College Street and the apartments on Sleater-Kinney sit on Puget Sound Energy gas or a 220V circuit that has seen several ranges come and go. Tanglewilde ranches often still have the original receptacle and wiring behind a range that is nothing like the one it was installed for. Past the gas main on Nisqually Cut-off Road, around the lakes and outside Yelm, ranges draw from a propane tank, and one that came from a city house burns wrong until somebody changes the orifices.
Our fee to diagnose is $99. For it, a technician brings meter and thermocouple to the range, identifies the broken component by measurement, and sets a repair figure down in writing before you commit. Proceed and the $99 is one slice of that figure, already counted. Decide against it and your cost for the visit finishes at $99. If the appliance is still within its maker's warranty period we say that plainly before either path is chosen.
Range and oven work from Lacey addresses
Electric oven bakes cold, broiler works — Ruddell Road 1980s house
A freestanding electric range in a 1980s house off Ruddell Road preheats forever and never reaches temperature, while the broil element glows fine. The bake element has burned through, often showing a blister or a snapped coil, or the bake relay on the board has failed. We measure the element and the voltage at its terminals, replace whichever is dead, and watch the oven hold its setpoint.
Gas oven igniter glows but never lights — Meridian Campus rental
In a Campus Glen rental on PSE gas, the oven igniter glows orange for minutes and the burner never catches. Age has weakened the igniter until it pulls too few amps for the safety valve to open. Among gas oven repairs this is the everyday one, and the quick one. We measure igniter amperage, replace it, confirm the valve opens, and check the burner flame pattern for the landlord's file.
Oven dead after a self-clean cycle — DuPont Palisade Park
A Palisade Park range ran its self-clean cycle for the first time and has been dark since. High-temperature cleaning trips a thermal fuse behind the back panel, and on some models cooks the control board or the door lock motor. We test the fuse, the lock assembly and the board, replace what the heat took, and suggest a gentler cleaning routine that spares the fuse next time.
One glass-cooktop burner stays cold — Long Lake cabin remodel
A remodeled cabin on Hicks Lake has a radiant glass cooktop with a large burner that no longer heats. Either the radiant element has failed, the knob's infinite switch has scorched its contacts, or the limiter on the element has opened. We test each in turn from below, replace the failed part without lifting the glass more than necessary, and check the remaining burners for weak elements.
Range sooting and yellow flames on propane — Nisqually acreage
A family moves a gas range from Lacey city gas to a house on propane off Nisqually Cut-off Road, and the flames run yellow and leave soot on pans. Orifices and regulator are still sized for natural gas. We convert the orifices, flip or replace the regulator, adjust the air shutters and the oven burner, and confirm a clean blue flame at every position before leaving.
Oven temperature off by fifty degrees — Tanglewilde ranch
The oven in a Martin Way East ranch house burns cookies on the bottom and undercooks the middle, and the readout does not match a thermometer. A drifting temperature sensor or a wandering control calibration is behind it. We measure the sensor's resistance at known temperatures, replace it if it is off, recalibrate the control, and check the door gasket and hinges that let heat leak out.
Our process on a range or oven call
- Send us the fuel type, the brand and whatever the display is flashing; an F-code from a GE, Whirlpool, Frigidaire or Samsung range narrows the fault before we arrive.
- Gas connections are leak-checked and electric supply voltage confirmed at the receptacle before any component is judged.
- Each element, igniter, sensor, switch and board in the suspect chain is metered, and the repair figure is put in writing for approval.
- Bake elements, igniters, sensors, infinite switches and door parts for the major brands are carried; a special-order board is fitted on our return without an additional trip charge.
- The oven is run to temperature and checked against a thermocouple before we leave, and your emailed invoice spells out the warranty term in print.
Wall ovens, cooktops and the wiring behind them
Separate wall ovens and cooktops turn up throughout the 1990s and 2000s Lacey houses and the DuPont townhomes, and they fail differently from a freestanding range: cooling fans, door locks, hidden bake elements and touch panels rather than knobs and exposed coils. We work on both, including built-in units on request. In the older Tanglewilde and Lacey central houses we also look at what feeds the range, because a loose neutral in a 1970s receptacle or an undersized flex line explains more mystery oven faults than any board.
Landlords with ranges in the Sleater-Kinney apartments and the Meridian Campus rentals get the failed component photographed and the repair figure by email, with the invoice sent to the office and the tenant's access code discarded after the job. For families who move every few years through Lacey and DuPont we also do the conversions and reconnections that come with a range that traveled in a moving truck: propane to natural gas or back, a new cord for a four-wire receptacle, and anti-tip brackets that the previous house never had.
Asked in Lacey
My gas oven will not light but the stovetop burners work. What is wrong?
Nearly always the oven igniter. It still glows, which fools people, yet it has aged to the point where its current draw cannot open the gas safety valve. Replacing the igniter is a routine repair on most ranges. Less often the valve itself or the oven's spark module has failed, and the meter tells us which on the $99 visit.
Can you fix an oven that runs too hot or too cold?
Yes. An oven that misses its set temperature by more than fifteen or twenty degrees usually has a drifting temperature sensor, and the fix is a new sensor and a calibration check. A gasket or hinge that lets heat escape is the other common cause. We measure the actual cavity temperature against the display rather than trusting either one.
Do you convert ranges between natural gas and propane?
We do, and it is a frequent job for families moving between Lacey city gas and the propane houses around Nisqually, Yelm and Roy. The conversion changes the burner orifices and the regulator setting and adjusts the flames. A range that has not been converted burns yellow, soots pans and can produce carbon monoxide, so keep it off until the conversion is complete.
Can I keep cooking on a glass cooktop that has cracked?
No. A cracked glass top can let liquid reach the elements and wiring underneath, and the crack spreads with heat cycles. Stop using the burners near the crack. Glass tops can be replaced on many models, and we can tell you on the visit whether the replacement figure is reasonable for a cooktop of that age.
What happens if my range is still under the manufacturer's warranty?
You hear about it before spending a cent with us. Maker's coverage that still applies is usually the cheaper route, and telling you so beats taking your $99 for a repair someone else owes you. Where the coverage has lapsed or excludes the failed part, we proceed with the diagnostic and the written repair figure as usual.

The visit
From your call to the test cycle
- STEP 01
Reach the shop
Say which machine and what it is doing. You get a two-hour window that works around school runs and shifts, and a call when the van leaves the previous stop.
- STEP 02
Instruments first
Clamp meter on the compressor lead, probe thermometer in the cabinet, manometer on the gas manifold. Once the failed part has a name the whole job goes onto one sheet: a single total with the $99 already sitting inside it.
- STEP 03
Your call
Yes, and the part is usually on a van shelf and fitted that afternoon. No, and your only cost is the $99, plus knowing what broke.
- STEP 04
Proof it works
A complete cycle runs while you watch, the kick panel goes back on straight, and the invoice lists the warranty term in print.
