Book a repair visit — DuPont

Which machine, and what is it doing? The shop calls you back with a two-hour window. The trip out and the diagnosis run $99; if you then okay the repair, that $99 vanishes into the single total on the sheet. Book the visit for tomorrow or the day after and the repair comes down by up to $15 (same-day visits don’t qualify); a second machine looked at on the same trip takes $10 off its own diagnosis.

Ranges in DuPont: gas on one street, electric on the next

Oven, range and cooktop repair — Hawks Prairie Appliance Pro
Ovens, ranges & cooktops · DuPont

When Hoffman Hill and Palisade Park were built, some phases were plumbed for gas and some were not, so a DuPont street can have a gas range at one address and an electric slide-in at the next. Both are now old enough for the builder-grade packages to be failing in earnest. Gas ranges lose their oven igniters and spark modules; electric ranges crack their glass tops, burn out bake elements and cook their control boards during a self-clean cycle nobody should have run before Thanksgiving dinner. Igniters, elements, infinite switches, spark modules and thermal fuses for the Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, Samsung and LG ranges DuPont builders installed ride on the van, which is why the first visit is usually the only one.

In the historic village, the ranges are often older freestanding electric models fitted into narrow kitchens with 1900s proportions, and the wiring behind them can be a story in itself. Townhomes near Clocktower Park tend toward compact 30-inch slide-ins. Families who move every few years arrive with a range that does not match the hookup, or discover the anti-tip bracket never made it into the wall. We fix what is broken, set the range up properly and, where the manufacturer's coverage may still apply to a newer unit, we say so before any money is spent.

Range and oven repairs we handle in DuPont

Gas oven clicks and clicks but never lights

On a Hoffman Hill gas range, an oven that only clicks has an igniter whose current no longer releases the safety valve, a failed valve, or a spark module that fires the burners but cannot manage the oven. We read igniter amperage, watch ignition through to flame and replace igniter or valve as the reading dictates. Misfiring top burners usually add a damp switch to the list.

Electric oven heats slowly or unevenly

An electric oven that takes forever to preheat or bakes one side darker has a bake element cracked somewhere along its length, a broil element that skips preheat, a stalled convection fan, or a sensor reading a fictional temperature. We meter each element, compare the sensor to a probe thermometer and inspect the door seal, then replace the part that is off, so cookies match on both racks.

Glass cooktop cracked or a zone not heating

A crack in a glass-ceramic top usually follows a dropped pan or boiled-over sugar syrup, and once it spreads the top must be replaced for safety. A single dead zone with the glass intact points to the radiant element or the switch feeding it. We test both, weigh the repair against the range's age, and replace the glass as a complete assembly where that is the only safe option.

Door stuck shut since the last self-clean

Self-clean pushes an oven to its limits, and on many Whirlpool, GE and Frigidaire ranges the high-heat fuse or the lock motor gives out at the end of it, leaving the door latched and the oven dead. We release the latch, replace the fuse or lock assembly, test the board, which sometimes suffers too, and suggest gentler cleaning so the failure does not repeat before the next holiday.

Range dead after a Puget Sound Energy outage

November windstorms take down power across DuPont, and a range that shows nothing when the lights return has usually lost its board, or a fuse mounted on it, to the surge. Before condemning the board we check breaker, terminal block and cord, which on a recently moved electric range may be wired wrong. Boards for the common models are sourced quickly and fitted on a follow-up where needed.

Gas burner flame yellow, uneven or lifting off

A burner that burns yellow, lifts away from the cap or lights only partway around has a clogged port, a cap misaligned after cleaning, a cracked electrode or, on a range converted between gas types, the wrong orifice. We clear the ports, seat the caps, test the electrodes and confirm the orifices suit the Puget Sound Energy supply. Every burner shows a steady blue flame before we leave.

How a DuPont range visit runs

  • Fuel type, hookup and anti-tip bracket checked before the range is moved
  • Igniters, elements, switches and sensors metered, with the culprit pointed out
  • Oven temperature verified with a probe against the setpoint
  • A single repair figure by email, with your $99 forming part of it on approval
  • Every burner and the oven proven under heat after the repair, warranty term on the invoice

Approvals, tenants and the price of a DuPont range repair

Range repairs in DuPont often involve three people: the tenant who cooks on it, the owner who pays for it and the property manager in between. Our diagnostic is $99, and it produces the failed part identified with a meter and one repair figure, sent by email to whoever approves. Approving means the $99 is a portion of that figure you have already paid. Declining means $99 is the sum total. Invoices go by email with the warranty term printed on them, and if a board or glass top needs ordering, installing it later is our arrangement and never billed beyond the figure you accepted.

There is no travel charge for DuPont, because the van heads up I-5 from Hawks Prairie on most days and the DuPont exit is the first one on that northern leg. Range and oven calls are booked inside the week, Monday through Saturday from 8 to 7. Gate codes for the HOA communities are held only until the job is finished. Wall ovens, cooktops and built-in ranges from KitchenAid, Bosch and Electrolux are handled on request with the model number in hand.

Asked in DuPont

Is a clicking gas oven dangerous to keep using?

Usually the safety valve is doing its job and no gas is flowing, which is why the oven stays cold. Still, leave the oven alone until it is repaired, because a weak igniter can eventually open the valve late and light a larger amount of gas. Burners on top are generally fine to use in the meantime if they light normally.

Can a cracked glass cooktop be repaired, or is the range finished?

The glass is replaced as a complete top assembly, and on a range that is otherwise sound in Hoffman Hill or Palisade Park that is often worthwhile. On an older builder-grade unit the figure may approach the cost of a new range, and we tell you that plainly so you can decide. Choosing not to proceed leaves the visit at $99.

Our range came with us from another state and does not work here. Why?

Most often the electric range has a cord that does not match the DuPont outlet or was wired for the wrong configuration, or a gas range needs a different orifice for the local supply. We check the hookup, correct the cord or orifice and test the range fully. Anti-tip brackets are checked and fitted at the same time.

How soon can you come to DuPont for an oven that will not heat?

Inside the week, frequently sooner, since DuPont is the nearest stop on the I-5 leg the van runs north from Hawks Prairie. Same-day appointments are held for refrigerators that have stopped cooling; ovens and ranges are scheduled right behind them. If a holiday meal is at stake, tell us and we do what the calendar allows.

Do wall ovens and separate cooktops count?

Yes. Wall ovens, induction and radiant cooktops and slide-in ranges are everyday jobs, including the built-in KitchenAid, Bosch and Electrolux units found in some Palisade Park kitchens. Give us the model number when booking so the technician has the right documentation and parts, and mention whether the unit is gas, electric or induction.

The visit

From your call to the test cycle

  1. STEP 01

    Reach the shop

Say which machine and what it is doing. You get a two-hour window that works around school runs and shifts, and a call when the van leaves the previous stop.

  2. STEP 02

    Instruments first

Clamp meter on the compressor lead, probe thermometer in the cabinet, manometer on the gas manifold. Once the failed part has a name the whole job goes onto one sheet: a single total with the $99 already sitting inside it.

  3. STEP 03

    Your call

Yes, and the part is usually on a van shelf and fitted that afternoon. No, and your only cost is the $99, plus knowing what broke.

  4. STEP 04

    Proof it works

A complete cycle runs while you watch, the kick panel goes back on straight, and the invoice lists the warranty term in print.
