DuPont refrigerators fail on a schedule the neighbors recognize
Most refrigerators in DuPont came with the house. Hoffman Hill and Palisade Park were built out between 1995 and 2015, and the builder-package refrigerators installed alongside the granite, mostly side-by-sides and French-door models, have now reached the age where compressors, defrost heaters and inverter boards give up in clusters. When one household on a cul-de-sac calls us, two more usually follow within the year. The van already works the I-5 stretch between exit 111 and Lakewood on most days, so a call from Hoffman Hill fits into the day without any special arrangement.
The historic village is a different job. The 1900s company houses along Brandywine and Santa Cruz have small kitchens that were never laid out around a 36-inch refrigerator, so the units in them are often counter-depth or top-freezer models squeezed into alcoves with almost no airflow behind them. Add DuPont city water, moderately hard and prone to leaving deposits, and the inlet valve on the ice and dispenser line becomes a frequent culprit. We carry valves, thermistors, fan motors and start relays for the brands you actually own: LG, Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire and Kenmore.
Refrigerator problems we handle in DuPont
Fresh food section warm, freezer still cold
This is the classic DuPont townhouse call, and it is almost never the compressor. Frost has built up on the evaporator because the defrost heater, thermistor or control board stopped running the defrost cycle, and cold air can no longer reach the upper compartment. We confirm it by reading the temperature at the vent, then check heater, thermistor and board in turn until the dead one shows itself.
Compressor running nonstop and the kitchen getting warm
When a refrigerator never cycles off, cold is escaping through a bad door gasket, the condenser fan has stalled, or the condenser coil is matted with dust from a busy family kitchen. We inspect the gasket, spin-test the fan, read compressor amperage and clean the coil. Should the sealed system turn out to be the problem, you hear that before committing to anything past the $99.
Water collecting under the crisper drawers
Defrost meltwater should leave through a small drain and collect in a pan near the compressor. DuPont's harder water lets that drain choke with mineral and food film, and on LG models the heater clip that keeps it open is often missing. Water backs up, freezes beneath the fresh food floor and thaws onto the drawers. We open the drain and fit the right heater kit.
Will not restart after a Puget Sound Energy outage
November windstorms cut power across Hoffman Hill, and when it comes back some refrigerators stay silent. Usual causes: a start relay cracked by the surge, an inverter board whose relay burned, or a compressor overload that tripped and never reset. Each is tested rather than assumed, and the common relays and boards ride with us so the food you moved into coolers can go back in.
Humming, clicking or rattling from the back panel
A repeating click with no cooling points at the start relay or a compressor trying and failing to start. A rattle that changes when you press the back panel is usually a condenser fan blade touching ice or a loose mount. A grinding whir inside the freezer is the evaporator fan on a worn bearing. Each has its own fix, confirmed with a meter and a careful listen.
Door not sealing or gasket torn by a moving crew
Families who move every few years in DuPont often inherit a refrigerator whose gasket was pinched or split during the last move-out. A gap the width of a credit card will frost the freezer and run the compressor around the clock. We fit the correct gasket, reset hinges and cams so the door swings shut on its own, and confirm the mullion heater on a French-door unit still warms.
How a DuPont refrigerator visit goes
- Both compartment temperatures logged before any cover is removed
- Meter test of the compressor, start relay, fans and the full defrost circuit
- Failed part named and one repair figure emailed to you or your property manager
- Repair finished during the same stop whenever we carry the part
- Warranty term shown on the emailed invoice; your gate code erased at close-out
Renters, landlords and the $99 diagnostic in DuPont
A good share of DuPont households rent, and a good share of DuPont landlords live somewhere else entirely. Our process is built for that. The tenant lets us in or gives us a gate code, the technician diagnoses the refrigerator and sends the repair figure by email to whoever pays, and the work starts the moment a yes comes back. The owner or property manager receives the invoice by email, warranty term included, and we discard the gate code the day the job is finished. During PCS season we do this several times a week without anyone needing to take a day off.
The $99 diagnostic buys a real answer: metered testing at the refrigerator, the broken component identified, and a single figure for putting it right. Go ahead and your $99 is counted within what you approved, never added as a separate line. Choose to replace the refrigerator instead and $99 settles the visit. We also check whether the manufacturer's coverage still applies to a newer unit before anyone spends a dollar, and when a component must be ordered, the trip back to fit it belongs to our calendar, not your invoice.
Asked in DuPont
Can you really reach DuPont the same day?
Yes, provided the unit has stopped cooling and your call lands before noon, Monday through Saturday. Because DuPont is a straight run up I-5 from our Hawks Prairie base, a same-day stop in Hoffman Hill or the village just means pointing the van north and turning off at the exit. Other refrigerator work is booked inside the week.
My landlord is out of state. How does approval work?
We email the repair figure to whoever you tell us is responsible, whether that is an owner in another state or a property manager in Lacey. As soon as a yes comes back by phone or email we begin. The payer gets the invoice by email showing the warranty term, and you as the tenant never front the money or chase a reimbursement.
Is a twelve-year-old refrigerator worth fixing?
Often, yes. Replacing a defrost heater, thermistor, evaporator fan or start relay on a twelve-year-old Whirlpool or GE costs far less than a new unit and typically buys several more years. Where the trouble is refrigerant loss or a dying inverter compressor, we say plainly that replacement is the better path, and the visit stays at $99.
Can you service a panel-ready or built-in unit?
Panel-ready and built-in refrigerators are taken on request. Give us the brand and model number at booking so the right service documentation and any specialty fasteners come along. Most Hoffman Hill and Palisade Park kitchens have freestanding or counter-depth units from LG, Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire and KitchenAid, and those are everyday work for us.
What happens when a component is not in stock?
Certain boards and compressors are not carried on the van. In that case we order it, leave your refrigerator running as well as it can, and return to install it on our own calendar. That second trip costs you nothing beyond what you approved, and the warranty term on your invoice covers the component and the labor together.

The visit
From your call to the test cycle
- STEP 01
Reach the shop
Say which machine and what it is doing. You get a two-hour window that works around school runs and shifts, and a call when the van leaves the previous stop.
- STEP 02
Instruments first
Clamp meter on the compressor lead, probe thermometer in the cabinet, manometer on the gas manifold. Once the failed part has a name the whole job goes onto one sheet: a single total with the $99 already sitting inside it.
- STEP 03
Your call
Yes, and the part is usually on a van shelf and fitted that afternoon. No, and your only cost is the $99, plus knowing what broke.
- STEP 04
Proof it works
A complete cycle runs while you watch, the kick panel goes back on straight, and the invoice lists the warranty term in print.

Call or send the form; you hear back with a window before the shop closes, the van arrives carrying the usual parts for your make, and the $99 for the diagnosis rolls into the repair total if you go ahead.
