Yelm Dryer Repair for propane, natural gas and electric machines

Past the end of the Yelm gas main, dryers run on propane, and a machine set up for natural gas in a Tahoma Terra garage misbehaves on a prairie tank.

Book a repair visit — Yelm & North Yelm

Which machine, and what is it doing? The shop calls you back with a two-hour window. The trip out and the diagnosis run $99; if you then okay the repair, that $99 vanishes into the single total on the sheet. Book the visit for tomorrow or the day after and the repair comes down by up to $15 (same-day visits don’t qualify); a second machine looked at on the same trip takes $10 off its own diagnosis.

Three kinds of dryer, one prairie

Dryer repair — Hawks Prairie Appliance Pro
Dryers · Yelm & North Yelm

Yelm dryers fall into three groups. Inside town and in Tahoma Terra, natural gas dryers run on the Puget Sound Energy main. Out along Bald Hill Road, Vail Road and toward McKenna, gas dryers burn propane from a yard tank, and a machine that skipped conversion, or got the wrong orifice, burns poorly, soots the drum or refuses to light. Everywhere, electric dryers draw 240 volts from panels that see brownouts and generator power through the storm season. Each group breaks in its own fashion, and a technician who covers Yelm regularly recognizes the pattern from your description at booking.

The other thing Yelm laundry has in common is what goes into the drum: barn coats, feed-dusted jeans, dog blankets and towels used on horses. That lint is heavier and coarser than city lint, and it packs vent runs and clogs blower housings faster. Add older downtown houses whose dryer vents wander through a crawlspace, and airflow becomes the opening check on every no-heat or slow-dry call. Parts ride with us for Speed Queen, Whirlpool and Maytag, plus Kenmore, GE, Samsung and LG, including propane conversion kits for the common gas models.

Dryer problems we solve around Yelm

Propane dryer lights, then goes out

A propane dryer that catches and dies seconds later usually has a failing flame sensor, a weak igniter or a valve coil that cannot hold. On a machine never properly converted, the orifice and regulator setting are also suspect, and the flame burns lazy and yellow. We follow ignition through to flame, test coils and sensor, verify the conversion and replace what failed so the burner stays lit.

Electric dryer with weak heat after a brownout

Voltage sags and generator power across the Yelm prairie are hard on electric dryers. Half the 240-volt feed drops, the element runs at reduced power, and clothes come out damp after a full cycle. We read both legs at the terminal block and outlet, test element and cycling thermostat, and inspect cord and plug for heat damage. Sometimes the fix sits at the panel rather than the dryer.

Clothes taking twice as long to dry

Slow drying in Yelm is nearly always airflow. Barn lint packs the vent, a crawlspace run sags and collects water, or birds or wasps have colonized the outside hood. We measure exhaust flow, clean the blower housing and internal duct, and show you how restricted the vent is. Where the machine itself is at fault, a partly open element or a lazy burner, we find that too.

Thumping and squealing with every turn of the drum

Heavy loads of wet horse blankets wear dryer rollers and idler pulleys fast. A thump per rotation is a flat-spotted roller or a kinked belt; a squeal is the idler or rear drum bearing; a scrape means a worn glide or debris in the felt seal. We open the cabinet, check every roller, replace them as a set and fit a fresh belt so the noise stays gone.

Dryer stone dead after a windstorm

When Yelm's power returns after an outage and the dryer does not, we begin with basics: breaker, door switch, thermal fuse and voltage reaching the terminal block. If those pass, the main board took the hit. Thermal fuses and door switches for the common brands ride with us, boards can be sourced for most models, and we recommend a 240-volt appliance surge protector.

Hot smell or scorched laundry

A scorching smell from a dryer on a Yelm acreage is treated as urgent. Causes range from lint burning on the element, a stuck gas valve holding the burner on, a failed cycling thermostat, or a blower packed with lint from work clothes. We open the machine, clear heater and blower, test every thermostat and the gas valve, and correct the airflow before the dryer runs again.

The Yelm dryer visit, step by step

  • Fuel type and, on propane, the conversion checked before any diagnosis of the burner
  • Supply voltage read at the outlet and terminal block on electric machines
  • Exhaust flow measured, blower and internal duct cleared of packed lint
  • Failed part identified and a single repair figure emailed to you
  • Heat cycle run to completion after the repair, warranty term on the emailed invoice

One diagnostic, one figure, no distance charge to Yelm

For $99 the technician meters your dryer, identifies the failed component and produces a single figure to repair it. With your approval, the $99 has already been paid toward that figure and you owe only the difference. Without it, $99 covers the visit and nothing more. We do not add a mileage line for Yelm or North Yelm; the prairie is inside the same ring as Lacey. Dryer appointments are booked inside the week, and we group Yelm calls so the technician spends a solid block of the day out your way.

Approval by phone or email suits Yelm households whose working day is spent in Olympia or on the base, and your emailed invoice states the warranty term. If the dryer is young enough for the manufacturer's coverage to possibly apply, that comes up before you commit. When a gas valve assembly, a board or a conversion kit has to be ordered, fitting it on a later day is our expense, never a second charge on top of what you approved. Gate codes for the fenced properties are held only until the job is complete.

Asked in Yelm & North Yelm

Can you convert my natural gas dryer to propane?

Yes, for most gas dryers from the mainstream brands. We fit the manufacturer's conversion kit, change the orifice, set the regulator and verify the flame. If your dryer is already on propane and burning yellow or sooting the drum, the conversion may have been missed or done with the wrong kit, and we correct that.

Why does my electric dryer dry poorly only during storm season?

Because winter brings brownouts and generator power to Yelm. An electric dryer wants its full 240 volts; when one leg sags, the element runs at a fraction of its output. We read voltage at the outlet and terminal block, and if the trouble lies beyond the dryer, we say so and you can bring in an electrician.

Will you come out to properties off Bald Hill Road or Vail Road?

Yes. Yelm and North Yelm, including the prairie acreage and the roads toward McKenna, are inside our regular coverage with no mileage line. Long gravel driveways, gates and dogs are all fine. Share the gate code when booking and it is erased the moment the job closes.

Will the dryer be fixed on the first visit?

Usually. Igniters, coils, elements, fuses, belts and rollers are carried on the van, so those repairs finish the same day. A board or gas valve assembly for a less common model may require ordering; the follow-up visit is ours to absorb and the approved figure does not move.

Is a burning smell from the dryer urgent?

Yes. Stop using the dryer and call. Lint on the element, a stuck gas valve or a blower packed with barn lint can all produce that smell, and each can become a fire. We schedule those calls as early as the day allows, clear the machine, test the safety thermostats and fix the airflow before it runs again.

The visit

From your call to the test cycle

  1. STEP 01

    Reach the shop

Say which machine and what it is doing. You get a two-hour window that works around school runs and shifts, and a call when the van leaves the previous stop.

  2. STEP 02

    Instruments first

Clamp meter on the compressor lead, probe thermometer in the cabinet, manometer on the gas manifold. Once the failed part has a name the whole job goes onto one sheet: a single total with the $99 already sitting inside it.

  3. STEP 03

    Your call

Yes, and the part is usually on a van shelf and fitted that afternoon. No, and your only cost is the $99, plus knowing what broke.

  4. STEP 04

    Proof it works

A complete cycle runs while you watch, the kick panel goes back on straight, and the invoice lists the warranty term in print.
