Yelm Oven & Range Repair for propane, natural gas and electric kitchens
Beyond the end of the gas main in Yelm, ranges cook on propane from a tank by the driveway, while in town they run on natural gas or 240-volt electric.

Yelm ranges cook harder and on more fuels than most
A Yelm range works. Between the harvest, the hunting season and canning weeks in late summer when a glass cooktop holds a full canner for hours, ranges out here see loads that a Lacey townhouse range never does. Glass tops crack under the weight, radiant elements burn out from long high-heat runs, and gas burners clog with the spatter of a kitchen that feeds a crowd. Add the fuel question, natural gas in town and propane on the prairie, and a range that was moved from one Yelm house to another may be burning the wrong gas through the wrong orifice.
Electric ranges on the prairie have their own troubles. Voltage sags during the storm season, generator power that cannot carry a 240-volt oven, and outages that leave a control board dead or a clock flashing forever. Downtown Yelm still has plenty of older coil-top ranges that are simple and worth keeping, while Tahoma Terra and the newer subdivisions off SR-510 have slide-ins from Samsung, LG, GE and Frigidaire with boards, sensors and convection fans. Parts for every one of those ride along, propane conversion kits for the common gas models included.
Range, oven and cooktop repairs across Yelm
Propane range burning yellow or sooting the pans
A propane range that leaves black on the cookware or burns with a lazy yellow flame is usually running natural gas orifices, or its regulator has not been set for propane. Sometimes the conversion was done but the oven orifice was missed. We check every orifice and the regulator, fit the correct kit, adjust any air shutters and confirm a crisp blue flame on every burner and in the oven.
Oven will not reach temperature on propane or gas
A gas or propane oven that warms but never hits the setpoint has an igniter that opens the valve only partway, a valve that is failing, or a temperature sensor lying to the control. We measure the igniter's current, time the ignition, check the sensor against a probe thermometer and replace what is off. Bread and roasts come out right again.
Glass cooktop cracked during canning season
A canner full of jars is heavier and hotter for longer than a glass-ceramic top was built for, and cracks in Yelm kitchens spike every August and September. Once a crack spreads the top must be replaced, and we price that against the range's age. A zone that stopped heating with the glass intact is a radiant element or its switch, and those are repaired on the first visit.
Coil element dead on a downtown range
The older coil-top ranges around downtown Yelm are simple, and a dead burner is a coil, a receptacle burned by a loose contact, or an infinite switch. We test all three, replace whichever failed and check the remaining receptacles for the heat damage that spreads when a coil has been arcing. Those ranges have years left when maintained, and we say so instead of pushing a replacement.
Oven dead or clock flashing after an outage
When power returns after a Yelm windstorm and the range shows nothing, or the clock flashes and the oven refuses to start, the control board has usually taken the hit. We verify the breaker, terminal block and cord before blaming the board, then source the correct board and fit it. For homes on generator power, we check that the generator can carry the oven's draw, because many portable units cannot.
Burner sparks constantly or will not spark at all
A gas or propane burner that goes on clicking once lit, or never sparks, has an electrode that is damp or cracked, a switch shorted by a boil-over, or a dead spark module. Electrodes are dried and tested, switches and module metered, and the failed piece replaced. Continuous sparking on a Samsung or Frigidaire range is very often one switch, not the whole set, and we replace only that one.
The Yelm range visit in order
- Fuel identified and, on propane, every orifice and the regulator setting verified
- Supply voltage read at the terminal block on electric ranges
- Igniters, elements, switches, sensors and board metered and the failure explained
- One repair figure by email, with the $99 counted toward it when you say yes
- Oven temperature probed and every burner run after the repair, warranty term on the emailed invoice
What the visit costs in Yelm and North Yelm
Yelm sits inside the ring where Hawks Prairie Appliance Pro adds no mileage line, so a range on a farm off Bald Hill Road is diagnosed for the same $99 as one on Yelm Avenue. That $99 buys the technician's metered diagnosis, the failed part identified and one figure for the repair. On approval the $99 simply lives inside that figure; on refusal it is everything you owe. We do not quote hourly rates, and if a newer range might still be under the maker's coverage, you hear it before any repair is agreed.
Approval by phone or email works for Yelm households where one adult commutes to Lacey, Olympia or the base and the other is home with the range. Your invoice comes by email and states the warranty term. Parts that must be ordered, such as boards, glass tops and valve assemblies, are fitted on a return visit that we schedule and that adds nothing to your approved figure. Range and oven work is booked inside the week, Monday through Saturday from 8 to 7, and gate codes are erased once the job is complete.
Asked in Yelm & North Yelm
Can you convert my range from natural gas to propane?
Yes, for most gas ranges from the major brands. We fit the manufacturer's conversion kit, change every burner and oven orifice, reset the regulator and tune the flame. If your range was converted before and still soots or burns yellow, we check whether an orifice was missed or the regulator was left on the wrong setting.
Why did my glass cooktop crack while canning?
A full water-bath or pressure canner exceeds the weight and heat duration most glass-ceramic tops were designed for, especially when the pot overhangs the element. The crack often appears after the jars come off and the glass cools unevenly. We replace the top and tell you which zones and pot sizes the range can safely handle for next season.
Will you drive out to the prairie for one range repair?
Yes. Properties along Bald Hill Road, Vail Road, Crystal Springs Road and toward McKenna are inside our regular coverage, with no mileage line and the same $99 diagnostic as in town. Share a gate code at booking and it is deleted once the job closes. Long gravel driveways are no obstacle.
My oven does not work when we are on generator power. Is it broken?
Probably not. Most portable generators cannot supply the 240-volt draw an electric oven needs, and some produce power dirty enough to confuse the control board. If the oven works normally once utility power returns, the range is fine. If it does not, the board may have been damaged, and we test it before replacing anything.
Is an older coil-top range worth repairing?
Almost always. The coil-top ranges in older downtown Yelm houses are simple, and a coil, receptacle, infinite switch or bake element costs far less than a new range while restoring full function. We give you the repair figure and a plain opinion on the range's condition, and if you choose replacement instead, the visit ends at $99.

From your call to the test cycle
- STEP 01
Reach the shop
Say which machine and what it is doing. You get a two-hour window that works around school runs and shifts, and a call when the van leaves the previous stop.
- STEP 02
Instruments first
Clamp meter on the compressor lead, probe thermometer in the cabinet, manometer on the gas manifold. Once the failed part has a name the whole job goes onto one sheet: a single total with the $99 already sitting inside it.
- STEP 03
Your call
Yes, and the part is usually on a van shelf and fitted that afternoon. No, and your only cost is the $99, plus knowing what broke.
- STEP 04
Proof it works
A complete cycle runs while you watch, the kick panel goes back on straight, and the invoice lists the warranty term in print.
