Yelm Refrigerator & Freezer Repair, from Tahoma Terra to the prairie wells
Yelm refrigerators live a harder life than the ones in town: iron-heavy well water, outage after outage, generator power and a garage freezer holding half a steer.

Why Yelm refrigerators break differently
Inside the Yelm city limits, along Yelm Avenue and through Tahoma Terra, refrigerators drink city water and behave much like the ones in Lacey. Drive out Bald Hill Road, Vail Road or Crystal Springs Road and the picture changes. Prairie wells carry iron and hardness that clog dispenser filters early, coat the water inlet valve and leave an orange tint on ice. Power arrives at the end of long lines that go down in every November windstorm, and a generator that is not quite the right size does interesting things to an inverter compressor. We plan for all of that before we leave Hawks Prairie.
The other Yelm refrigerator is the second one. Almost every acreage property has a chest freezer or an old top-freezer unit in a garage or shop, holding elk, beef or the summer's berries, and when it stops in January nobody notices for a week. We repair those on the same visit as the kitchen unit when we can, and we are candid when a thirty-year-old garage freezer has reached the end. LG, Whirlpool, Frigidaire, GE, Kenmore and Amana are the brands we see most between the Nisqually River and the prairie.
Refrigerator and freezer repairs around Yelm
Ice cubes hollow, cloudy or orange-tinted
On a Yelm well, the inlet valve and fill tube take the brunt of iron and scale. Flow drops, the mold only half fills, and cubes come out small and discolored however often you change the filter. We time the fill, swap the valve where its screen is choked, clear the fill tube and confirm the supply line is not the restriction. An iron filter upstream helps.
Refrigerator dead after the generator ran
Portable generators keep the lights on across the Yelm prairie, but one that surges or sags in voltage can take out a refrigerator's main board or leave an inverter compressor refusing to start. We check voltage at the outlet, test the board and compressor windings, and replace the board when that is where the damage sits.
Frost sheeting inside the freezer compartment
Frost coating the freezer's rear panel means automatic defrost has quit. On the Whirlpool and Kenmore units common in the older downtown houses that is usually a heater or bimetal thermostat; on LG and GE it is more often a sensor or the board. We meter each piece, melt the ice so the evaporator can breathe again, and replace whatever failed.
Fridge warm, freezer fine, in a Tahoma Terra French-door unit
Newer French-door refrigerators in Tahoma Terra move cold air from the freezer up to the fresh food section through a damper and a small fan. A stuck damper, a seized fan or an iced evaporator leaves the top warm while the bottom stays frozen. We test damper motor, fan and defrost system in one visit and carry common LG and GE parts so the fix happens that day.
Garage freezer stopped in the cold months
Many garage freezers in Yelm sit below the temperature they were designed for during January, and older models simply stop cycling when the garage is colder than the setpoint. Others have a failed start relay, a thermostat stuck open or a compressor that has finally worn out. We sort out which it is, tell you whether a garage-rated unit is the smarter answer, and repair what makes sense to repair.
Leaking onto the kitchen floor
A puddle spreading from beneath a refrigerator has a handful of sources: a blocked defrost drain, a split ice-maker supply line, a cracked valve body or a drain pan knocked off its perch. Hard well water clogs the drain faster and corrodes valve bodies sooner. We follow the water upstream to its origin, dry underneath the unit and fix the cause rather than mopping up.
What a Yelm refrigerator visit looks like
- Voltage checked at the outlet, since Yelm outages and generators leave marks
- Compartment temperatures logged, then compressor, fans and defrost circuit metered
- Water pressure and iron staining at the inlet noted on every well-water home
- A single repair figure delivered by email before any part is opened
- Parts fitted the same trip when stocked; otherwise we return at no addition to your figure
Straight pricing for Yelm and North Yelm
Yelm is far enough from Hawks Prairie that people assume there will be a mileage line on the invoice. There is not. Yelm and North Yelm sit inside the ring we cover at the same terms as Lacey, so a refrigerator on a long gravel driveway off Vail Road is priced exactly like one in a Lacey apartment. We book Yelm calls in clusters so the technician is in your area for a good part of the day, which is why a same-day refrigerator visit is realistic when you call before noon.
Our diagnostic is $99. For that you get metered testing, a definite answer about what failed, and a single figure for putting it right. Say yes to the repair and the $99 forms the opening part of that figure rather than a separate charge; say no and $99 is the complete cost of having us out. If a newer refrigerator might still be under the maker's coverage, you hear that up front. When a board or compressor has to be ordered, the second trip is our cost, and your emailed invoice states the warranty term.
Asked in Yelm & North Yelm
How fast can you get to Yelm for a refrigerator that stopped cooling?
Same day for a call placed before noon, Monday through Saturday, whether you are in Tahoma Terra, downtown or out on the prairie. Refrigerator calls jump the queue because food is at stake. Everything else refrigerator-related, from a noisy fan to a slow ice maker, is scheduled inside the week.
Will my well water keep breaking the ice and water dispenser?
It will keep working the valve and filter hard, yes. Iron and hardness on prairie wells clog the inlet screen and the fill tube faster than city water does. We replace the choked parts, but we also tell you plainly that an iron filter or softener ahead of the refrigerator is what stops the pattern repeating every couple of years.
Can you check the garage freezer on the same visit?
Yes. Mention it at booking and we allow time for it. A second unit diagnosed on the same trip gets its own figure, so you can approve one repair and decline the other. Many Yelm customers use that visit to decide whether the old garage freezer is worth keeping through another winter.
Do you charge more for the drive out to Yelm?
No. Yelm and North Yelm are inside the ring where we do not add a mileage line, the same as Lacey, DuPont or Lakewood. The $99 diagnostic and the repair figure are the only numbers you will see. That applies on Bald Hill Road and Crystal Springs Road as much as it does on Yelm Avenue.
The refrigerator is still fairly new. Should I call the manufacturer instead?
Possibly, and we say so. When a refrigerator looks young enough for the maker's coverage to still apply, the technician raises it before the diagnostic begins so you can decide. Plenty of Yelm customers still choose us because a maker's service appointment can take weeks, but that is your call to make with the facts in hand.

The visit
From your call to the test cycle
- STEP 01
Reach the shop
Say which machine and what it is doing. You get a two-hour window that works around school runs and shifts, and a call when the van leaves the previous stop.
- STEP 02
Instruments first
Clamp meter on the compressor lead, probe thermometer in the cabinet, manometer on the gas manifold. Once the failed part has a name the whole job goes onto one sheet: a single total with the $99 already sitting inside it.
- STEP 03
Your call
Yes, and the part is usually on a van shelf and fitted that afternoon. No, and your only cost is the $99, plus knowing what broke.
- STEP 04
Proof it works
A complete cycle runs while you watch, the kick panel goes back on straight, and the invoice lists the warranty term in print.
