Book a repair visit — Yelm & North Yelm

Which machine, and what is it doing? The shop calls you back with a two-hour window. The trip out and the diagnosis run $99; if you then okay the repair, that $99 vanishes into the single total on the sheet. Book the visit for tomorrow or the day after and the repair comes down by up to $15 (same-day visits don’t qualify); a second machine looked at on the same trip takes $10 off its own diagnosis.

What well water does to a Yelm ice maker

Ice maker repair — Hawks Prairie Appliance Pro
Ice makers · Yelm & North Yelm

In Tahoma Terra and around downtown, refrigerators drink Yelm city water and their ice makers fail the ordinary ways, a module that stops cycling or a valve that sticks. Out on the prairie along Vail Road, Bald Hill Road and Crystal Springs Road, the story is the well. Iron oxidizes in the fill line and tints the cubes orange, hardness scales the mold so cubes stick and fracture, and grit packs the valve screen until the tray gets a trickle. Filters that should last six months clog in six weeks. The refrigerator keeps working; the ice maker gives up first, and it gives up often.

Pressure is the other Yelm problem. A well pump cycles between its cut-in and cut-out settings, and an ice maker valve that opens during the low end of that swing delivers a short fill, so cubes come out small or hollow and the mold sometimes overfills on the next cycle to compensate. Then there are the outages: a refrigerator that restarts after a Puget Sound Energy outage does not always bring its ice maker back with it. Modules and valves for Whirlpool, Kenmore, GE, Frigidaire and LG travel with us, plus the in-door ice room parts that Tahoma Terra's French-door units need.

Ice maker repairs we make across Yelm

Orange or rust-tinted ice

Iron in a Yelm well oxidizes as it sits in the fill line and the mold, and the cubes come out tinted. The ice maker is usually still working, but the valve screen and fill tube carry iron sediment that reduces the fill. We replace the choked valve, flush the line and clean the mold, and explain that iron filtration ahead of the refrigerator is what stops the tint returning.

Ice maker quit after the power came back

When a Yelm outage ends, some ice makers stay silent even though the refrigerator is cooling. The module can stall mid-cycle, the freezer takes a day to get cold enough for a harvest, or the surge has taken out the valve coil or the control feeding the module. We cycle the module manually, meter the valve and check freezer temperature, then replace whichever piece the outage killed.

Small, cloudy or hollow cubes on a well system

A short fill on a prairie property comes from low pressure during the well pump's cycle, a valve screen choked by grit, or a filter that clogged far ahead of its rating. We measure fill volume over several cycles, test pressure at the refrigerator, clear or replace the valve and adjust the fill where the model allows. Where the well pump settings are the cause, we say so.

Cubes stuck in the mold or fused into a block

Hardness scales the ice mold so cubes stop releasing cleanly, then crack, pile up and fuse in the bin. On in-door ice makers in Tahoma Terra's LG refrigerators, warm air seeping past the ice room seal freezes everything into one mass. We descale the mold, check the ejector and harvest heater, replace a worn mold assembly and reseal the ice room where that is the cause.

Valve humming, then water on the floor

A fill valve corroded by iron and hardness can stick partly open and dribble water into the freezer, where it freezes on the floor and eventually flows out onto the kitchen floor. A cracked valve body leaks behind the refrigerator instead. We trace the water, replace the valve, clear the frozen fill tube and inspect the supply line for the pinch or split that hides behind older downtown refrigerators.

Second refrigerator in the garage stops making ice

Many Yelm properties run an older refrigerator in a garage or shop, and its ice maker stops in winter when the garage temperature drops below what the freezer thermostat expects. Other times the supply line has frozen in an unheated wall. We check the freezer temperature, the supply route and the module, repair what is broken and tell you plainly when the garage unit is not worth further money.

How the visit goes on a Yelm ice maker

  • Well pressure, filter age and iron staining assessed at the refrigerator first
  • Fill valve metered and the fill volume measured over more than one cycle
  • Module cycled by hand, mold and ejector inspected for scale
  • One repair figure by email; the $99 sits inside it once you approve
  • A full harvest of ice confirmed before we leave, warranty term on the emailed invoice

The $99 diagnostic in Yelm and North Yelm

Diagnosing an ice maker in Yelm costs what it costs anywhere in our ring: $99, covering metered testing at the refrigerator, the failed part identified and one figure for the repair. Once you say yes, that $99 has already been paid toward the figure, leaving only the balance. If you would rather not, $99 is the entire cost. There is no mileage line for Yelm, North Yelm or the prairie roads toward McKenna and Rainier, and we do not bill by the hour. Where a newer refrigerator might still be under its maker's coverage, we raise it before any repair.

Approval comes by phone or email, so the person paying can be at work in Lacey while the technician is at the refrigerator. Invoices go out by email with the warranty term printed on them. Valves and modules for the common brands ride with the technician, so ice is usually dropping again before the van leaves; an in-door ice room assembly or dispenser board that must be ordered gets installed on a later trip we schedule, with your figure unchanged. Ice maker work is booked inside the week, and gate codes for fenced properties are deleted once the job closes.

Asked in Yelm & North Yelm

Will my well water keep killing the ice maker?

It will keep working the valve and screen hard, and the tint will return until iron is filtered out before the refrigerator. We repair what has failed and clean what has clogged, and we tell you plainly that a whole-house iron filter or a sediment filter on the refrigerator line is what breaks the cycle of repeat valve replacements.

Why does my ice maker make less ice in winter?

Two Yelm reasons. A refrigerator in a cold garage runs less, so the freezer takes longer to reach harvest temperature and cycles less often. Indoors, colder incoming well water and lower demand can also slow the rhythm. If production has dropped to nothing rather than just slowed, something has failed, and that is worth a visit.

Do you come out to the prairie for just an ice maker?

Yes. Yelm, North Yelm and the acreage along Bald Hill Road, Vail Road and toward McKenna are inside our regular coverage with no mileage line. If the refrigerator itself is working, the visit is scheduled inside the week like any other appliance; if it has stopped cooling as well, call before noon for a same-day visit.

Can you fix the in-door ice maker on my Tahoma Terra refrigerator?

Yes. The in-door ice rooms on LG French-door refrigerators are routine work for us, including the frost buildup that fuses the ice and locks the auger. We thaw the compartment, replace the sealing parts and fit the manufacturer's improved components where they exist. Mention brand and model at booking so the right parts come along.

The refrigerator is old. Is a new ice maker worth it?

Often, if the refrigerator itself is cooling well and the cabinet is sound. Replacing a module or valve is modest next to replacing the refrigerator. We give you the figure and a plain opinion, and if you decide the money is better spent elsewhere, the visit ends at $99 and you have a clear answer.

The visit

From your call to the test cycle

  1. STEP 01

    Reach the shop

Say which machine and what it is doing. You get a two-hour window that works around school runs and shifts, and a call when the van leaves the previous stop.

  2. STEP 02

    Instruments first

Clamp meter on the compressor lead, probe thermometer in the cabinet, manometer on the gas manifold. Once the failed part has a name the whole job goes onto one sheet: a single total with the $99 already sitting inside it.

  3. STEP 03

    Your call

Yes, and the part is usually on a van shelf and fitted that afternoon. No, and your only cost is the $99, plus knowing what broke.

  4. STEP 04

    Proof it works

A complete cycle runs while you watch, the kick panel goes back on straight, and the invoice lists the warranty term in print.
